Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Bustling Port Kelang is the principal
port of entry for Malaysia. The
country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur,
situated in a valley surrounded by
jagged hills on the West Coast of the
Malaysian Peninsula, is a surprisingly
modern city of domes, minarets and
spacious, tree-lined avenues. Close to
downtown is Bukit Nanas Forest
Reserve, a natural jungle sanctuary for birds and wildlife. Kuala
Lumpur is also a shoppers’ haven. The many shopping opportunities
include Central Market, a good place to shop for curios and handicraft
items, as well as several plazas, all located in the so-called Golden
Triangle of Kuala Lumpur. Not to be missed is the Petronas Twin
Towers at the heart of the city, one of the modern marvels of the
world. Kuala Lumpur leads Malaysia’s fast-paced development in trade
and commerce, banking and finance, manufacturing, transportation,
information technology, and tourism. Serving as the political and
cultural center of the nation, Kuala Lumpur is a grand gateway to a
fascinating destination.

Yangon, Myanmar
Through its decades of self-isolation, the unspoiled country of
Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) has retained its charm,
fascinating traditions, and the irresistible politeness of its people.
Although the initial settlement dates back
over 2,500 years, the city itself was only
founded in 1753. The many shady parks and
beautiful lakes have earned Yangon a
reputation as the garden city of the East.
Its unmistakably colonial
style buildings, open
markets, and wide treelined
avenues endow it
with a mix of old-world
charm and modern
vitality. The highlight of the cityscape is the famous Shwedagon
Pagoda—often considered as one of the wonders of the world. Sitting
high atop the sacred shrine of Singuttara Hill, this stupa houses the
relics of four Buddhas, encased in gold and in jewels. Genuine gold
plates, cover the brick structure attached by traditional rivets. People
from all over the country, as well as its monarchs, have donated gold to
the pagoda to maintain it since the 15th century, when Queen Sawbu
gave her weight in gold, and continues to this day.

Cochin, India
Cochin is a vibrant city situated
on the Southwest Coast of the
Indian Peninsula in the
breathtakingly scenic and
prosperous state of Kerala, hailed
as “God’s Own Country.” It has a
magnificent natural harbor that
has attracted overseas traders for
hundreds of years. Cochin
merchants began trading in spices such as black pepper and cardamom
with the Jews, Arabs, Phoenicians, Dutch, Portuguese, and Chinese
more than 600 years ago. Its famous landmark is a row of Chinese
fishing nets (cheenavala), distinctly unique to Cochin, at the mouth of
the harbor leading to the Arabian sea. Locals believe that traders from
the court of Kublai Khan introduced these nets here. The city is a blend
of modern and colonial India—with its contemporary downtown on
one side and its old quarters, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry on the other
side, maintaining a colonial air. Topping the list of popular gifts from
the city are handicrafts, spices, and nuts. Ancient mariners have all left
their mark on this cosmopolitan city, which is often called the “Queen
of the Arabian Sea.”

Mumbai (Bombay), India
Mumbai, the most populous city in
India, is the commercial and
entertainment capital of India. It is
home to the largest film industry in
the world, more commonly known as
Bollywood. You haven’t been to
Mumbai if you haven’t seen the
Gateway to India, Mumbai’s most
famous monument, built to
commemorate the visit of King
George V and Queen Mary in 1911. It’s the place to catch a boat to
Elephanta Caves, resonating with the spiritual energy of India, dating
back to the 6th century. The cave complex is a collection of shrines,
courtyards, inner cells, grand halls, and porticos arranged in the
splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture and filled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu gods
and goddesses. Stately colonial buildings
that stand like proud old sentinels of a
bygone era circumscribe Flora Fountain, the
very heart of Mumbai. Mumbai is also one
of the rare cities to accommodate a national
park, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park,
within its city limits. There are plenty of
things to see and do at the many museums, art galleries, bazaars, parks,
and temples |
