Tortola, British
Virgin Islands
You'll begin the day by sailing into
the famous horseshoe-shaped
harbor of Road Town, capital of
the British Virgin Islands, where
most activities begin and end on
the island of Tortola. This island is a sailor's paradise; its
wealth of inlets and harbors have been transformed into
luxurious moorings for yachtsmen of the Caribbean. Legend
has it that after Christopher Columbus discovered the other
Caribbean islands, he returned to Tortola to live.

St. Maarten,
Netherlands Antilles
With its colorful mix of French charm
and Dutch hospitality, St. Maarten is
like two islands rolled into one. In
1648, it was amicably divided and the
border between Dutch St. Maarten and
French St. Martin, although completely open, exists even to this day. This postage-stamp-sized
island covers an area of 37 square miles, 17 of which are
Dutch. Phillipsburg on the Dutch side and Marigot on the
French side are the capitals. You will have the opportunity of
visiting Phillipsburg, where Front Street offers true Dutch
flavors and souvenirs.

January 30
St. Barts, French
West Indies
Tiny St. Barts covers only 9-1/2
square miles and is internationally
renowned among island
connoisseurs as the crown jewel
of the French West Indies. A pastel-colored slice of serene
Normandy, Brittany, and the Côte d'Azur transplanted to the
turquoise waters of the Caribbean. In the capital town of
Gustavia, you will find an intriguing mix of both French and
Swedish architecture reflecting the island's varied history and
fabulous duty-free shopping at luxury purveyors such as
Cartier, Hermès, and Gucci.

February 1
Aruba, Dutch
West Indies
Combining Dutch efficiency and
Caribbean charm, Aruba has
become one of the most popular
playgrounds in the Caribbean,
boasting sophisticated resorts
and casinos and breathtaking blue skies. A long narrow island
located just 15 miles from Venezuela's coast, with a dry and
sunny climate year-round, its distinctive beauty lies in the
stark contrast between the sea and its countryside. Next to
arid deserts, which host an array of wild rock formations,
curiously bent divi-divi trees, and cactus jungles, are
magnificent beaches that shelve into transparent blue waters.

Transit Through the
Panama Canal
An engineering marvel, the canal
has reduced the continental divide
and drastically eased global
commerce. With three sets of locks,
the 51-mile trek is an awe-inspiring
testament to human ingenuity.
Constructed more than 90 years ago,
the conduit altered the geography of the Americas forever.
Dams stopped the rivers in their tracks. Valleys became lakes,
and mountains islands.
