Moderator Evan Simonoff, editor-in-chief of Financial Advisor magazine, asked this panel of expert retirement advisors for strategies to help pre- and post-retirees weather exceptionally choppy markets.
Panelists included, Christopher Cordaro, wealth manager at Regent Atlantic Capital, J. Michael Martin, president and CEO of Financial Advantage, and Marilyn Capelli Dimitroff, president of Capelli Financial Services.
The panelists began by outlining their reasons why they have not made any significant and sudden changes to their strategies to accommodate what they see as a cyclical bear market. Instead, they focused on strategic preparation of a long-term portfolio that has enough liquidity to see investors through bear market interruptions, as well as the right investments to take advantage of the next wave up.
They went on to discuss absolute returns, the best assets for a recovery, and the pros and cons of hedging a portfolio, with the panelists noting that most portfolios should have a hedging component in order to decrease the risk of the entire holdings.
In wide-ranging closing discussion, subjects included the media's effect on investor behavior, current and proposed examples of asset allocation, and the perennial retiree question of whether expenses should be derived strictly from a portfolio's income components.
At a period when investors are besieged by dire warnings and extreme recommendations, this panel discussion, featuring three advisors who have seen many market cycles, should help put this bear market into a reasonable perspective.
