Our latest featured small-cap recommendation provides post-acute healthcare services to patients, notes money manager Jim Oberweis, Jr., editor of The Oberweis Report.
LHC Group (LHCG) offers home-based service locations with a wide range of services, including skilled nursing, community-based nursing and companion services, medically-oriented social services, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
The company has also designed proprietary guidelines to treat chronic diseases and conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, low vision, spinal stenosis, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, complex wound care, and chronic pain.
The nurses, home health aides, and therapists in their home-based agencies work closely with patients and their families to design and implement individualized treatment plans in accordance with a physician-prescribed plan of care.
As of December 31, 2014, LHCG owned and/or operated 292 home-based service locations, with 275 home nursing agency locations and 13 community-based services agencies.
LHCG’s hospices provide end-of-life care to patients with terminal illnesses; services include pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, inpatient and respite care, homemaker services, and counseling.
The company’s LTACH locations provide services primarily to patients with complex medical conditions who have transitioned out of a hospital intensive care unit but whose conditions remain too severe for treatment in a non-acute setting.
In the company’s latest reported fourth quarter, sales increased approximately 17% to $193.4 million from $165.3 million in the fourth quarter of last year. LHC reported earnings per share of $0.45 in the latest reported fourth quarter versus $0.29 in the same quarter of last year.
Clients of Oberweis Asset Management own approximately 12,000 shares. These shares may be appropriate for risk-oriented investors.
