Commodities and Futures for Active Traders
Few markets offer the variety, excitement and profit potential of the commodities markets, which is why so many traders make commodities trading and commodity futures trading their bread and butter.
Traders interested in trading commodities have dozens to choose from including industrial and precious metals ... energy sources ... agricultural crops ... livestock … even frozen orange juice. But, despite the vast variety, all commodity trading falls into two categories: hard and soft.
Thinking about hard commodities — such as gold, silver, oil and natural gas — as the more exciting is tempting. And, thinking about soft commodities — such as corn, wheat, soybeans and beef — as a bit boring is common. But, the fact is, which commodity you trade doesn’t matter, at least, not as much as where you’re trading it.
That’s because all commodity trading is handled by two very different markets. You can trade in real time on the spot market. Or, you can buy and sell commodity options by trading futures. However, most commodity trading is done by trading futures and with good reason. While the spot market can sometimes offer some thrills by trading the actual commodity, the futures market can be extremely volatile.
For active traders, volatility means plenty of opportunity to reap rich rewards — or suffer steep losses. With stakes like these, it doesn’t matter what you’re trading. There’s plenty of excitement to go around.
Of course, this also means that those who engage in futures trading should plan their strategies carefully and stay alert for news or factors that might impact their trade.

The liquidity and volatility of commodity futures trading can be fertile ground for active traders. But, successful futures trading rarely happens by chance.
That's why savvy traders always do their homework. When trading futures, knowing exactly what you’re getting into -- especially when trading futures — is essential. So, before leaping to buy (or sell), be sure to do your homework.
