It was with great sadness that we learned recently of the passing of Mark Mobius at the age of 89. A legendary emerging markets investment expert, and tireless advocate of on-the-ground research, Mobius was also a long-time contributor to MoneyShow – one we were honored to work with for decades.
Born to German and Puerto Rican parents in Hempstead, New York, Mobius obtained bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D degrees from Boston University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also studied at other universities in Wisconsin, New Mexico, and Japan, before joining the Franklin Templeton money management firm in 1987.
Mobius was a pioneer of EM investing at Franklin, earning the nickname the “godfather of emerging markets.” He travelled to 112 countries during the course of his career to conduct research and see the world, while also authoring more than a dozen books that included Passport to Profits and The Investor’s Guide to Emerging Markets.

“We’ve had the privilege to work with many elite market educators in our 45-year history. But few were as talented, distinguished, and dedicated to their craft as Mark. He was a tireless advocate of global investing – and someone whose relentless passion and thirst for knowledge was unparalleled,” said MoneyShow Chair and CEO Kim Githler. “I’m honored to have known him and will miss him dearly.”
Mobius retired from Franklin Templeton in 2018, but continued his work in the industry, co-founding Mobius Capital Partners that same year. He also managed the Mobius Emerging Opportunities Fund – and shared his insights with MoneyShow investors and traders during a series of live and virtual events.
Here are a couple examples we’re sharing in his memory:
