CFRA just raised its 12-month S&P 500 Index (^SPX) price target to 8,650 from 7,730, implying approximately 11.8% upside. This revision also implies a year-end 2026 closing level of 8,050, representing a projected full-year price gain of 17.6%, outlines Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.
The target revision reflects a confluence of fundamental, technical, and historical factors. On the fundamental side, CFRA’s analysts see an average 16.9% upside to their 12-month price targets across S&P 500 constituents, pointing to broad-based earnings momentum and valuation support.

The historical backdrop is equally constructive. Since WWII, the S&P 500 has advanced 100% of the time from October of midterm election years to the following October. The third year of the presidential cycle has historically seen the strongest returns out of the four-year cycle, too.
On the macro side, oil prices remain elevated but are expected to normalize as Middle East tensions ease. That should help contain inflation going forward. A healthy labor market, strong wage growth, and the wealth effect from a market tracking for its fourth consecutive year of double-digit gains should sustain consumer spending.
Finally, the AI infrastructure buildout remains in its early stages, with growing monetization of AI investments serving as a key catalyst for the market. Taken together, these factors underpin our conviction that the nearly four-year-old bull market has further room to run.
